Visit A Farm

Excuse me for not re-writing this one, but it’s written just fine the way it is. I’ll re-post this as the date approaches, but I thought you might want to plan ahead. FARM CRAWL 2007 is Sunday, October 7th from 11am to 5pm. Five independent family farm operations, all within a six mile radius of each other, are hosting simultaneous open houses. Enjoy a leisurely autumn day crawling from farm to farm.
Visit south Marion County/north Lucas County (one hour south of Des Moines) to see each of these individual operations. Tour the farms, see the animals, meet the farmers, sample the goodies, purchase locally grown products and have fun in the beautiful Iowa countryside! Free admission onto all the farms. While at the farms, enter to win a basket of goodies assembled with wonderful items from each farm.
The five farms include: Blue Gate Farm, Coyote Run Farm, Pierce’s Pumpkin Patch, Reichert’s Dairy Air and Schneider Orchards. Visit the Farm Crawl website at www.farmcrawl.com for more details, maps and directions.
PS. If anyone’s from /familiar with this area, we’d love your lodging, touristy and restaurant recommendations. This might be a fun overnight trip, too.

Humane Education and Pets at the ARL

The Animal Rescue League offers educational presentations for children ages 4 and up. The programs help teach animal compassion and good pet care. They present to classrooms and community groups, so if you’re looking for a great kids’ program…The preschool through third grade program offers basic pet care, caged animal care, safety around animals and teaches kids the difference between pets and animals in the wild (I could have used that info as a WV hillbilly child with no less than dozen different tetnus/rabies scares in the years prior to 8th grade).
They offer adult presentations and facility tours, as well. I love the program outlines - so age appropriate. If you’re interested in scheduling a tour or a presentation with the ARL, please contact the Humane Education Coordinator.
ALSO, if you’d like to adopt a lucky pet or two, you can search their site for available animals. There’s also info about sponsoring pets while they’re at the shelter - a great alternative if you don’t want a pet. You can donate money through the site and even sign up to volunteer - look around.
Another good site is PetFinder.com. There’s listings from area animal shelters and rescues - ideal when looking for a certain type of pet. We located our very sweet Lucy the Calico-Siamese through this site and found her at the Ames city shelter. You can also find pets on CraigsList.com, through the clasifieds and at area PetSmart stores. (Be sure to get all the details about the pet and be wary of anything that sounds too good to be true.)
