"$100 Laptop" To Give and Get

olpc-logo.jpgbanner.jpg
There’s been a lot of talk about the “$100 Laptop,” whether or not the money would be better spent on immunizations*, etc., and how its actual cost went up to something closer to  $188 because of rising production costs. The price hike may have affected how governments perceive the program,  because verbal handshakes from developing countries haven’t manifested themselves into actual computer purchases.  The people behind One Laptop Per Child have come up with what they hope is another way to get computers into the hands of children across the world.  They’re gearing up to start the “G1G1 Movement.”  Here’s the details:
“Starting November 12, One Laptop Per Child will be offering a Give 1 Get 1 Program for a brief window of time. For $399, you’ll be purchasing two XO laptops—one that will be sent to empower a child to learn in a developing nation, and one that will be sent to your child at home. If you’re interested in Give 1 Get 1, we’ll be happy to send you a reminder email. Just sign up in the box to the left and you’ll receive your reminder prior to the November 12 launch date.”
Visit the website to find out more about the program and check out the computer’s specs. Sign up they’ll even send you a reminder.  If you don’t want one for your home, perhaps you can get together with your Meet Up group, ladies club or service group to just Give 1. Thanks.

*As important as immunizations are (and they no doubt are), having globally recognized skills will also help these kids to help themselves, their families, and hopefully, their communities.

Thanks for the Yves Behar info - had no idea he was behind the design. For more info on Behar and the $100 computer in full display mode, visit fuseproject.com and then click Enter*Design*Technology*Product - chances are you own or want something that's come from fuseproject.

We bought one for our 8 year old and hope it comes before the holidays.
Don't forget that $200 of this purchase is tax deductible as a donation.
